Creative Media & Digital Innovation Exchange Program - Enjoying the perfect study-life-balance in Chur for a semester

During the fall semester 2020, the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons in Switzerland introduces a new program for international exchange students. Incomings will be able to profit from a unique study program combining courses from the field of Multimedia Production and Digital Business Management. Both fields are combined in a multidisciplinary project (10 ECTS) in which the students independently develop a research question and either theoretically or practically work on it in a creative manner. The multidisciplinary project can draw from the following disciplines and will be mentored by faculty specialized in these fields: Visualization, Interactive Media, Video and Audio Production, Animation, Live Communication, Corporate Communication, Radio Production, Media Science, User Experience, xR, Data Science, Digital Business Innovation, Digital Strategy.

Besides the multidisciplinary project a maximum of four courses (each 4 ECTS) from the following selection can be chosen individually:

Designing a Video Game

Storytelling as well as narration play an important role when new worlds are created in the design of video games. The goal in this minor is to develop a game design document and to test the ideas with prototypes. Game designing is a powerful skill that can also be used in other contexts such as filmmaking.

International and Intercultural Communication

New technologies and globalization demand new communication skills. An important requirement to communicate successfully in international and intercultural contexts is that one is aware of their own culture. In this minor the students gain a comprehensive cultural understanding and learn how to interact positively in intercultural situations.

Convergent Production

In this module, the students create a journalistic multimedia product for the platform «». Topic and form of this product are chosen by the students themselves. The focus is on the exploration of new media potential, creativity and innovation. Importance is also placed on a critical self-reflection of concept, experience and learning.

Info Space

On the basis of new technologies the students will deal with the explorative development of information and data visualizations, both physical and virtual. An important keyword in this context is spacial multimedia presentation.

Introduction Programming 1

Usually software development and implementation of information systems require a profound knowledge of algorithms, data structures and programming languages. However, with a basic expertise in computer programming it is already possible to understand the possibilities and limitations of software engineering. In this course, students will learn to use the programming language Python, implement their own small software projects and make smaller changes to other Python projects.

Usability Engineering

It is essential that interactive systems (e.g. website, software, consumer electronics) do not only meet technical requirements but also consider user needs. In order to define these needs, users, their tasks, the context of use as well as cultural factors need to be investigated. The course covers the basics of user-centered design (UCD) and usability engineering with a focus on usability evaluations.

Digital Disruption Potential

Technological progress and ubiquitous network connections combined with entrepreneurial ingenuity are turning industries upside down. The course takes an in-depth look at the root causes and effects of this tremendous shift and introduces key concepts and models that help understanding digital disruption better. Further, the course comprises company visits and thereby offers practical insights.

Experience Reality

Until few years ago, xR (Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality) was often called a “hype”. However, since the big players are investing horrendous sums in new technologies and release better applications and devices, no one doubts the enormous potential of xR anymore. In this course, students will learn about the various application fields of xR but also the major challenges with regard to design, technology and storytelling.

Students further have the possibility to visit a language course (2 ECTS) and receive training with regard to their scientific writing skills in English (2 ECTS).
