Overview

The research field of 'spatial planning and residential development' contributes to highlighting causes and interdependencies that enable those affected to initiate processes and develop creative solutions in this area. Holistic approaches and methods are an important objective here.

Municipalities and cities are increasingly finding themselves confronted with having to weigh up community concerns within the context of supra-municipal or even global interests, while, at the same time, having to determine options for action within their own political boundaries. The challenges here are becoming noticeably more complex. There is a need for research projects that make this complexity manageable and that, in adopting a focus on the municipal level of action, convey practice-based fundamentals by adopting adequate participatory and cooperative processes as well as integral and process-based approaches in the field of spatial and residential development. Methods incorporating digitally supported analyses for the recognition of patterns in terms of living conditions allow for social needs to be identified on the basis of parametric and digital spatial models. This offers the potential to plan and develop settlement structures in line with demand and in accordance with location-specific challenges. The results achieved in this way can be implemented as framework conditions in corresponding residential development processes, meaning the development objectives can be verified and specified. This creates a situation in which objectives are defined together using an approach that starts with the people and aims to exploit potential as well as strengthening and preserving the identity of a district, municipality or region.
