Top grade for two tourism programmes

The World Tourism Organization certifies two study programmes at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons with top marks

26. June 2020

The University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons was awarded the top grade by the World Tourism Organization UNWTO for two of its study programmes. The "Bachelor of Science in Tourism" and the "Master of Science in Tourism and Change" recently underwent an international examination and were subsequently certified. A crucial factor for the successful certification was their international positioning and the quality of their teaching.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the leading international tourism organization. It is responsible for promoting responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism. The two tourism programmes at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons passed the international certification by the organization with top marks. Based on the number of points, the certificate issued by the UNWTO is valid for three years, the maximum possible. The evaluators particularly emphasized the curriculum design of the two programmes and the high quality of teaching.
Graduates of the two tourism programmes can now add the quality label for tourism training programs from the World Tourism Organization UNWTO to their degree. «I am extremely pleased about the UNWTO certification for the Master in Tourism and Change, as the curriculum has been re-designed for the 2020 start. Especially in the current situation, the ability to adapt to change is crucial for the future of tourism, »says the Director of Studies, Jan Mosedale.

Important international positioning
The aim of the certification programme of the UNWTO is to improve the quality of tourism education, training and research programmes. According to the World Tourism Organization, the two tourism programmes at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons are characterised above all by high quality in teaching and by their international positioning. «The UNWTO confirms that we are on the right path. With the bachelor’s degree, we offer our students an innovative and practice-oriented range of training at world-class level” says Thorsten Merkle, Director of Studies of the bachelor’s degree.
Thanks to the positive assessment, the relevance of the tourism degree programmes can now be better demonstrated to students and external partners in the public and private sectors.

Equipped for change
The tourism sector is changing. In addition to traditional travel services, more and more is being offered under the umbrella of tourism. Leisure activities in culture, music, sport, architecture, design and health have developed to become integral contents in tourism. In addition, the business world is becoming increasingly mobile. This has created an exciting growth market. The two programmes at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons equip their graduates for these challenges and help them to successfully shape this business discipline.
