The focus areas of the Institute for Photonics and ICT (IPI) include applications and systems that are based on photonics as well as information and communication technologies. The activities and tasks of the institute cover the research fields of Optoelectronics, Image Processing, the Internet of Things (IoT) and ICT. Our skills in the areas of sensors, data recording and processing, language and data communication as well as web application development and visualisation complement one another perfectly here.

The research team of the Institute for Photonics and ICT deals with the application of photonics technologies for the procurement and evaluation of information.
The research fields of Optoelectronics and Image Processing complement one another perfectly: in the research field of Optoelectronics, sensor and camera systems are designed and constructed that deliver the raw data for the subsequent image processing. This allows for the development of advanced smart sensors. In combination with our know-how in the area of ICT and our research focus area of Big Data and Analytics, our institute thus possesses the required basic knowledge when it comes to issues and applications relating to the Internet of Things.
Internet of Things and ICT
The expertise of the Institute for Photonics and ICT (IPI) is incorporated in various study and further education programmes.
Bachelor's degree Photonics
CAS Image Processing
Specialised courses in technology
The Technology Service Lab at the Institute for Photonics and ICT (IPI) offers research projects and services in the areas of light measurement, EMC and energy efficiency.
With the establishment of the bachelor’s degree programme in Photonics, which is like no other in Switzerland, a Photonics Lab was also set up and equipped with state-of-the-art technology that is also available for research projects and services. The range of offered measurements comprises the characterisation of optoelectronic components and systems, immunity to external light sources and the fulfilment of eye protection classes.
