Abstract: The transformation process from a product-oriented company to a service-oriented company is known as servitization. The following research focuses on how a shared understanding of servitization can be enhanced through the application of business model design methods and discusses the role of co-creation in this process. The continuous adaptation of the business model is crucial to move from the exploration phase to the engagement phase in the servitization process and to overcome the tipping points between these two phases through a common understanding and conviction. The research at hands ads to literature as it discusses how a business model analysis, and the applied methods support the development of a shared understanding.

  • Deflorin, Patricia; Scherrer, Maike; Schillo, Katrin (2021): The influence of IIoT on manufacturing network coordination. In: Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management ahead-of-print. Available online at https://doi.org/10.1108/JMTM-09-2019-0346, last checked on 07.05.2021

Abstract: Purpose: The coordination of a manufacturing network is a challenging task and may be contingent upon the manufacturing environment. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and manufacturing network coordination relate. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a single case study, the paper at hand provides insights on IIoT enablers and the relationship to manufacturing coordination mechanism. The data sample is based on 15 group interviews with overall eight employees from headquarters and business units. Findings: The derived results show that the IIoT enablers (digital technologies, connectivity, data, capabilities and management) are highly related to the manufacturing network coordination mechanism. The results indicate that IIoT initiatives and manufacturing network coordination should be designed to support each other. Originality/value: The implementation if IIoT initiatives is often analysed in isolation without considering the manufacturing network and more specifically the manufacturing network coordination mechanism. The results highlight how the implementation of IIoT initiatives may act as trigger to adapt formal manufacturing network coordination mechanism.

In: Vezetéstudomány / Budapest Management Review 51, S. 2-13. Available online at https://doi.org/10.14267/VEZTUD.2020.11.01, last checked on 10.03.2021

Abstract: The paper aims at exploring the prerequisites for a beneficial knowledge transfer between manufacturing plants of multinational companies (MNCs), by taking the characteristics of the knowledge sending and knowledge receiving plant into consideration. This research seeks to understand how efforts undertaken by manufacturing plants, and how collaborative tools and coordination mechanisms influence a successful knowledge transfer. The study includes thirteen case studies conducted in manufacturing plants from four different European countries (i.e., Switzerland, Romania, Albania, and Macedonia). Given the exploratory nature of this study, the authors used a qualitative research approach. The main method of data collection involved multiple semi-structured interviews at manufacturing plants, uniformly applied in each country in order to observe general patterns across different cases. Their results show that the personal interaction between knowledge sending and receiving plants is more important for a successful knowledge transfer than information systems or prior related knowledge.

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpe.2018.12.004

Abstract: Manufacturing plants operating within the international manufacturing network (IMN) of a multinational company (MNC) frequently participate in the intra-company creation and distribution of knowledge, thereby contributing to the competitive advantage of the whole company and at the same time strengthening their own position within the MNC. International business and operations management literature suggests that plants taking up a knowledge-sending role within their IMN have a stronger position within the company. Nevertheless, literature offers little guidance on how to become a knowledge disseminator within the IMN. This article proposes to fill an important gap in the literature related to the concept of disseminative capacity, aiming (1) to explore how the knowledge-sending and knowledge-receiving roles of manufacturing plants can be assessed in an IMN context, and (2) to identify the capabilities needed for a plant to become a knowledge-sending unit within the IMN. To reach this objective, thirteen case studies were analyzed involving plants in four different countries. Results from the case studies show that (1) manufacturing plants can be positioned along a continuum from predominantly knowledge-receiving to predominantly knowledge-sending units, with multiple intermediary positions coexisting; (2) several plants have a strategic intent to change their positions, moving mainly along this continuum towards a higher intensity of knowledge-sending roles; (3) three elements are identified as necessary preconditions to develop disseminative capabilities, namely a knowledge-sharing-oriented organizational culture, incentive systems and organizational structures that reward knowledge sharing, and the intensity of inter-plant human interactions.

Abstract: IIoT may influence supplier, internal and customer integration. However, the influence may not be described with the usual items of SCI but instead needs to be adapted. The analysis is based on 11 IIoT initiatives and reveals that the overarching changes related to people, data and technologies can be summarized into measures concerning condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Thus, the respective factors seem to be relevant in order to analyse the influence of IIoT initiatives on SCI. Despite the decision where to start (internal or external), the IIoT initiatives seem to lead to a higher level in both dimensions.

Abstract: The paper at hand analyses if plants follow a development path in knowledge transfer from a knowledge receiver role to a knowledge sender role. In this, the plant’s age and the content of knowledge that is transferred are analysed. The study includes thirteen case studies in four different European countries (i.e., Switzerland, Romania, Albania, and Macedonia) and shows that the content of the transferred knowledge changes in relation to the plant’s development stage and its role that the plant takes at the end of the undergone development stage. The lower the development stage, the more basic knowledge related to innovation and product/process improvement is transferred. As the development stage gets higher, more specific task related knowledge is transferred. Furthermore, results indicate that the plant’s age cannot fully be linked to the development stage of the plant under investigation.

Abstract: Technologies related to IIoT may have a huge potential to generate new value. We argue that in order to fully explore and exploit the potential of those technologies, the concept of business models needs to be applied. In doing so, a qualitative research approach is applied to understand how to explore and exploit technologies by means of business model innovation. We show that connectivity is an important extension of the business model in order to understand how to explore and exploit new technologies, especially in relation to IIoT. In addition, the interdependencies between the different business model dimensions are discussed.

Abstract: Purpose: Technologies related to industrial internet/industry 4.0 may have a huge potential to generate new value. We argue that in order to fully explore and exploit the potential of those technologies, the concept of business models needs to be applied. Design/Methodology/Approach: We apply an explorative research approach based on case study analysis. We analyse four examples of business model innovation in order to understand how technologies can be explored and exploited by means of business model innovation. Findings: It is essential to explore and exploit new technologies. Business model innovation without the adoption of new technologies affects the business model outcome negatively. Originality/Value: Connectivity is central to industrial internet/industry 4.0. Hence, it needs to be included into the business model decomposition. In addition, the analysis shows the interdependencies between the different dimensions and thus, enhances transparency.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the internal network of multinational companies (MNC) and aims to investigate the role of information systems (IS) based on modern information and communication technologies (ICT) in transferring knowledge between different plants of the MNC, a subject still debated in the literature. To shed more light on this relationship, we propose that in the context of the MNC, the plant’s role in the knowledge network has to be taken into consideration.

Abstract: The lateral knowledge flow between subsidiaries is still an emerging area of inquiry. Studies show that not all provided knowledge is equally beneficial for the receiving subsidiary. In the paper at hand, we analyse if differences in strategic objectives of subsidiaries influences the perception of value of the provided knowledge from the recipient. The results of a single-case study show that more knowledge is shared between subsidiaries following the same strategic objectives. This leads to the conclusion that strategic homogeneity between subsidiaries increases the perception of the value of received knowledge from the recipient’s perspective.

In: Logistics Innovation, S. 16-19. Available online at http://www.vnl.ch/services/zeitschrift, last checked on 20.03.2020

Abstract: Im Rahmen ihrer Internationalisierung gründen viele KMU Standorte im Ausland.

Abstract: Lately, many small and medium sized companies have built up a plant in a foreign country, either to benefit from market access, low cost resources or access to expertise (Ferdows, 1989, Feldmann and Olhager, 2013). The internationalisation of the manufacturing network leads to new challenges for entrepreneurs. Especially, small and medium sized companies claim that the coordination of the traditional and the newly established foreign plant is time consuming and inefficient. We assume that there exist complexity drivers, which hinder an efficient and effective collaboration between the plants and thus negatively influence manufacturing network performance. Thus, we need to (1) achieve an understanding of the relevant complexity drivers and (2) how these influence the collaboration between the internationally distributed plants. Finally, based on this insight, we (3) need to derive measures which enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the collaboration. Hence, we aim to answer two research questions: (1) Which complexity drivers influence the collaboration between dispersed manufacturing plants and (2) how can these complexity drivers be reduced?
