Abstract: Due to increased public pressure and tightening legal frameworks, companies face the task of ensuring responsible management not only within their own organisations but also in their international supply chains. l Successfully addressing the complex challenges along international supply chains requires all actors involved – first and foremost, companies and their suppliers – to take collective action. This CoAct-Handbook provides large companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with tools and methods to ensure responsible management in the various supply chain constellations. For this purpose, a model was developed to classify each buyer-supplier relationship according to the company’s ability to influence the supplier and the risk level associated with the supplier related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. The model shows that each company, even if its respective ability to influence the supplier may differ, is able to take measures for responsible management in the supply chain in each constellation. In addition, options for action take the form of a roadmap and a toolkit.

  • Loi, Michele; Hauser, Christian; Christen, Markus (2022): Highway to (Digital) Surveillance. When Are Clients Coerced to Share Their Data with Insurers?. In: Journal of Business Ethics 175, S. 7-19. Available online at https://doi.org/10.1007/s10551-020-04668-1, last checked on 17.03.2022

Abstract: Clients may feel trapped into sharing their private digital data with insurance companies to get a desired insurance product or premium. However, private insurance must collect some data to offer products and premiums appropriate to the client’s level of risk. This situation creates tension between the value of privacy and common insurance business practice. We argue for three main claims: first, coercion to share private data with insurers is pro tanto wrong because it violates the autonomous choice of a privacy-valuing client. Second, we maintain that irrespective of being coerced, the choice of accepting digital surveillance by insurers makes it harder for the client to protect his or her autonomy (and to act spontaneously and authentically). The violation of autonomy also makes coercing customers into digital surveillance pro tanto morally wrong. Third, having identified an economically plausible process involving no direct coercion by insurers, leading to the adoption of digital surveillance, we argue that such an outcome generates further threats against autonomy. This threat provides individuals with a pro tanto reason to prevent this process. We highlight the freedom dilemma faced by regulators who aim to prevent this outcome by constraining market freedoms and argue for the need for further moral and empirical research on this question.

  • Hauser, Christian; Simonyan, Aram; Werner, Arndt (2021): Condoning Corrupt Behavior at Work. What Roles Do Machiavellianism, On-the-Job Experience, and Neutralization Play?. In: Business & Society 60, S. 1468-1506. Available online at https://doi.org/10.1177/0007650319898474, last checked on 17.03.2022

Abstract: Corruption continues to be a considerable challenge for internationally active companies. In this article, we examine personal and socioenvironmental antecedents of corrupt behavior in organizations. In particular, we aim to illuminate the links between Machiavellianism, on-the-job experience with corrupt behavior at work, neutralization, and the attitude of business professionals toward corruption. The empirical analysis is based on the responses of 169 professionals. At first, a positive relationship between both Machiavellianism and on-the-job experience and the acceptance of corruption appears in the model. However, an in-depth mediation analysis shows that neutralization is the keystone linking both Machiavellianism and on-the-job experience to the likelihood to condone corruption. Based on these results, we offer avenues for further research and implications for practitioners.

Abstract: Risks, which could jeopardize the integrity of a company, are widespread. This holds true for firms located in Switzerland too. According to a recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (2018), almost 40 percent of Swiss companies have been affected by illegal and unethical behavior, such as embezzlement, cybercrime, intellectual property infringements, corruption, fraud, money laundering, and anti-competitive agreements. Although the number of cases in Switzerland is relatively low when compared to other countries globally, the financial damage for affected Swiss companies caused by these incidents is nevertheless above the global average.

  • Hauser, Christian; Ryan, Annmarie (2021): Higher education institutions, PRME and partnerships for the goals. Retrofit labeling or driving force for change?. In: Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal 12, S. 1268-1288. DOI: 10.1108/SAMPJ-03-2020-0069

    DOI: https://doi.org/10.1108/SAMPJ-03-2020-0069

Abstract: Purpose: This paper aims to propose a framework to map partnerships as practiced in higher education institutions (HEIs) and trace the current mode of engagement between HEIs and their partners. This paper reflects on the alignment between current practices and what is understood in the literature as “true” partnerships. We are interested in the different modes of engagement that are labeled by the HEIs as partnerships and consider the plasticity of the term. The interest is in how the term is operationalized by HEIs and how variations in approach can be accounted for while still maintaining some stability and common understanding of the term partnership. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing on extant literature in the field of cross-sector partnerships, a three-dimensional framework is proposed to map partnerships as practiced in HEIs. Furthermore, this paper draws on insights gained from the partnership stories of 13 leading principles of responsible management education (PRME) signatories to evidence examples of how this framework can help us to categorize the different types of engagement that the HEIs call partnerships. These case stories were gathered in the fall of 2019, based on a brief inquiry form sent to the 39 PRME signatories who were part of the PRME Champions Cycle 2018–2019. Findings: This paper sees cases where faculty drive interaction on sustainable development goal-related issues with external stakeholders, but where the impact of these interactions seems to reside within the main business of the HEI (teaching and research). In contrast, much partnering work addresses broader social impacts. Of particular, interest in partnerships that seek to address a specific local issue, first and foremost and doing so in such a way as to apply the unique resources of the HEI working in multi-stakeholder networks. This paper also notes important variation between individual faculty-driven initiatives and initiatives where the school provides a strategic framework to support these efforts. Research limitations/implications: By focusing on the academic sector and its stakeholder partnerships, this paper contributes to the literature on cross-sector partnerships. In particular, the specifics of this context and the importance of, for example, academic freedom have been under-researched in this field. Furthermore, the framework presented is novel in that it helps us to grasp the nuances of external university partnerships that can form out of individual, programmatic and other institutional levels. Practical implications: From a practice perspective, the framework offers a useable tool for HEI partnership managers to position themselves and their activities and reflect more on how they organize external partnerships. Further, this tool offers a more precise framework for the discussion on partnerships within the PRME to sharpen the partnership instrument and bring more clarity about what is meant by the partnership for the goals. Originality/value: The paper offers a novel partnership portfolio framework that contributes both to theory and practice. The framework aids in mapping the locus of benefits/outcomes and the material and affective commitments made by the HEI to bring these collaborations about. In dimensionalizing partnerships in this way, this paper can conceptualize a balanced portfolio in an HEI’s partnerships for the goals.

Abstract: In recent years, trade-control laws and regulations such as embargoes and sanctions have gained importance. However, there is limited empirical research on the ways in which small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) respond to such coercive economic measures. Building on the literature on organizational responses to external demands and behavioral ethics, this study addresses this issue to better understand how external pressures and managerial decision-making are associated with the scope of trade-control compliance programs. Based on a sample of 289 SMEs, the findings show that the organizational responses of SMEs reflect proportionate adjustments to regulatory pressures but only if decision-makers are well informed and aware of the prevailing rules and regulations. Conversely, uninformed decision-making leads to a disproportionate response resulting in an inadequately reduced scope of the compliance program. In addition, the results indicate that SMEs that are highly integrated into supply chains are susceptible to passing-the-buck behavior.

  • Hauser, Christian (2021): The role of web-based reporting systems in safeguarding whistleblowers’ anonymity. EURAM 21st Annual Conference. European Academy of Management. Online, 16. Juni, 2021

Abstract: The widespread nature of corruption worldwide and its potentially serious consequences for multinational corporations (MNCs) have led to an increase in research on organizational controls designed to prevent, detect or respond to corrupt behavior. One such organizational control discussed in the literature is whistleblowing, which is often described as an effective measure to combat serious corporate misconduct. The extant whistleblowing literature focuses mainly on the individual informant, while less attention has been paid to the formal structures – i.e., whistleblowing channels – set up by organizations to facilitate whistleblowing. Drawing on expectancy theory, this study examines the ability of different types of reporting channels to safeguard the anonymity of whistleblowers. Based on a survey covering 178 organizations from France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, this study shows that a web-based reporting system is more effective in protecting whistleblowers’ identities than conventional reporting channels. It thus demonstrates that ICT-based tools can play an important role in the fight against corrupt behavior against or on behalf of MNCs.
