DOI: https://doi.org/10.17192/bfdm.2023.2.8524 Abstract: In diesem Text werden die Erkenntnisse aus zehn Interviews mit Vertreter*innen von Infrastrukturen, die in der Schweiz in Hochschulen und Forschungseinrichtungen das Open Research Data Management unterstützen, vorgestellt. Es zeigt sich auf der einen Seite, dass ein grundsätzliches Wissen über ORD überall vorhanden ist, auf der anderen Seite aber auch, dass es eine grosse Diversität von Definitionen, Arbeitsfeldern und Strukturen gibt. Grundsätzlich hat sich in vielen Hochschul- und Forschungseinrichtungen schon eine funktionierende ORD-Praxis entwickelt, welche von lokalen Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten geprägt ist. Dies beginnt bei der Frage, was in den Einrichtungen als Teil von Open Data und damit Aufgabe der Infrastruktur angesehen wird, geht über die institutionelle Anbindung der jeweiligen unterstützenden Strukturen bis hin zur tatsächlichen Praxis. Ein allgemein geteiltes Problem ist die nachhaltige Finanzierung der für ORD notwendigen Arbeit.

It was written and edited by a group of about 40 collaborators in a series of six book sprint events that took place between 1 and 10 June 2021. The document provides practical material, such as competence profiles, learning outcomes and lesson plans, and supporting information. It incorporates community feedback received during the public consultation which ran from 27 July to 12 September 2021.

Abstract: Das «Netzwerk Naturhistorische Sammlungen Schweiz» (SwissCollNet) ist eine Initiative, die sich für eine bessere Zugänglichkeit von naturhistorischen Sammlungen für Forschung, Bildung und Gesellschaft einsetzt. In der Förderperiode 2021-2024 plant SwissCollNet, möglichst viele Sammlungen zu identifizieren, zu priorisieren und zu digitalisieren sowie ein Online-Portal – die Virtuelle Naturhistorische Sammlung Schweiz (nachfolgend SVNHC) – aufzubauen, das einen offenen Zugang zu harmonisierten Beispieldaten aus den Schweizer Sammlungen bietet. Basierend auf den Bedürfnissen der Sammlungen und Datenzentren erarbeitete die FHGR als neutraler Partner im Auftrag von SwissCollNet Szenarien für die technische Umsetzung des SVNHC-Portals im Rahmen einer Vorstudie.

Abstract: The FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) guiding principles for research data management have been established to advance data-driven science and are by now widely adopted among journals, funders and institutions. In order to comply with the FAIR principles, researchers must ensure that data are correctly documented and stored throughout the lifetime of a project. However, dealing with the ever-increasing amount and complexity of data and information generated in research labs requires new data management skills that researchers need to acquire at the beginning of their career. To this end, the commitment of the academic institutions and funding agencies is of critical importance so that scientists can be provided with tools, education and support for data management. Here we present the ongoing efforts in this area at ETH Zurich, where the Scientific IT Services and the ETH Library support scientists with tools and services in data management. Similar efforts at the national level, with initiatives funded by swissuniversities, are also presented.

In this practice paper, we will describe the collaborative effort between the two Swiss federal institutes of technology, namely EPFL and ETH Zurich, as well as some partners of the national Data Life Cycle Management (DLCM) project, which resulted in a very helpful document as reported by our researchers.

Abstract: Forschende an der ETH Zürich generieren in ihrer täglichen Arbeit grosse Mengen an Daten unterschiedlichster Beschaffenheit. Um deren Nutzbarkeit langfristig zu gewährleisten und den Anforderungen der Geldgeber zu entsprechen, sind sie auf ein effizientes Datenmanagement, inklusive Erstellung von Datenmanagementplänen angewiesen. Letztere wurden dieses Jahr besonders aktuell durch die Ankündigung des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds (SNF), dass ab Oktober 2017 für jeden Projektantrag ein Datenmanagementplan erstellt und eingereicht werden muss. Um die Forschenden der ETH Zürich zu unterstützen, stellt die ETHBibliothek seit 2015 Beratungs- und Schulungsangebote im Bereich Forschungsdatenmanagement bereit, welche stetig ausgebaut und den neusten Anforderungen angepasst werden.

Many funding bodies mandate the creation of data management plans and open access publication of the research results they funded. In order to concentrate the efforts of different universities, libraries, and IT-services, the project “Research Data Life-Cycle Management: From Pilot Implementations to National Services (Data Life-Cycle Management, DLCM1)”, was launched by eight Swiss Higher Education Institutions on behalf of the former Swiss University Conference (SUC) as part of the programme SUC P-2 “DLCM”, which is chiefly designed to improve the handling of scientific information in Switzerland. With the start of DLCM in 2015 the Libraries of the two Swiss federal institutes of technology, EPF Lausanne and ETH Zurich, rose to the occasion and strengthened their respective initiatives and efforts by creating personalized data management plan (DMP) services and training sessions on research data management. The services and training sessions were set up in close collaboration with the scientific IT departments and the Research Office at EPFL Library and ETH Library, thus enabling the libraries to offer expertise tailored to researchers’ needs, and to cover the entirety of the data life-cycle. The closer collaboration with researchers during training sessions and consultations contributed to the establishment of stronger trust relationships between scientists and information professionals at the two Swiss federal institutes of technology. A mutual learning process was sparked, allowing both sides to share best practices and tackle new challenges together. By building on existing experiences, resources, and tools available within Swiss higher education institutions, the DLCM project focuses on the common goals: to harmonize and strengthen research data management practices across actors (researchers and information professionals), disciplines (sciences, social sciences, and humanities), and institutions (universities, universities of applied sciences, and universities’ service providers) in a sustainable way. While universities are obviously competing for funding, students, and scholarly excellence, there is a need to use available resources efficiently and also to share best practices acknowledging the high level of staff mobility between institutions. With this background, we aim to share our insights, experiences, and evolving best practices regarding research data management training, resources, and support services. To this end, our paper focuses on four major aspects: our new data management training, our personalized research data management support services, our lessons learned and how we envision the way forward.

DOI: http://www.mdpi.com/2220-9964/5/6/91 Abstract: Research as a digital enterprise has created new, often poorly addressed challenges for the management and curation of research to ensure continuity, transparency, and accountability. There is a common misunderstanding that curation can be considered at a later point in the research cycle or delegated or that it is too burdensome or too expensive due to a lack of efficient tools. This creates a curation gap between research practice and curation needs. We argue that this gap can be narrowed if curators provide attractive support that befits research needs and if researchers consistently manage their work according to generic concepts consistently from the beginning. A rather uniquely long-term case study demonstrates how such concepts have helped to pragmatically implement a research practice intentionally using only minimalist tools for sustained, self-contained archiving since 1989. The paper sketches the concepts underlying three core research activities. (i) handling of research data, (ii) reference management as part of scholarly publishing, and (iii) advancing theories through modelling and simulation. These concepts represent a universally transferable best research practice, while technical details are obviously prone to continuous change. We hope it stimulates researchers to manage research similarly and that curators gain a better understanding of the curation challenges research practice actually faces.

This article summarizes the data services and the overall approach to data management as currently practised at ETH-Bibliothek, the main library of ETH Zürich, the largest technical university in Switzerland. The services offered by service providers within ETH Zürich cover the entirety of the data life-cycle. The library provides support regarding conceptual questions, offers training and services concerning data publication and long-term preservation. As research data management continues to play a steadily more prominent part in both the requirements of researchers and funders as well as curricula and good scientific practice, ETH-Bibliothek is establishing close collaborations with researchers, in order to promote a mutual learning process and tackle new challenges.

Although fungal spores contribute to heterogeneous freezing, their impact is reduced by their low numbers as compared to other heterogeneous ice nuclei.

A literature study has been conducted and emission fluxes have been calculated based on 35 fungal spore concentration datasets. Biome area data has been derived from the World Resource Institute. Several assumptions and simplifications needed to be adopted while aggregating the data: results from different measurement methods have been treated equally, while diurnal and seasonal cycles have been neglected. Moreover flux data were aggregated to very coarse biome areas due to scarcity of data. Results show number fluxes per square meter and second of 194 for tropical and subtropical forests, 203 for all other forests, 1203 for shrub, 2509 for crop, 8 for tundra, and 165 for grassland. No data were found for land ice. The annual mean global fluxes amount to 1.69 × 10–11 kg m−2 s−1 as the best estimates, and 9.01 × 10–12 kg m−2 s−1 and 3.28 × 10–11 kg m−2 s−1 as the low and high estimate, respectively.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsci.2009.12.002 Abstract: Greenhouse gas intensity is a ratio comparing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of an activity or economic sector to the economic value it generates. In recent years, many countries have calculated the GHG intensity of their economic sectors as a basis for policy making. The GHG intensity of tourism, however, has not been determined since tourism is not measured as an economic sector in the national accounts. While for tourism-reliant countries it would be useful to know this quantity, a number of difficulties exist in its determination. In this study, we determine the GHG intensity of tourism’s value added in Switzerland by means of a detailed bottom-up approach with the main methodological focus on how to achieve consistent system boundaries. For comparison, we calculate the tourism sector’s GHG intensity for selected European countries using a simpler top-down approach. Our results show that the Swiss tourism sector is more than four times more GHG intensive than the Swiss economy on average. Of all tourism’s sub-sectors, air transport stands out as the sector with by far largest emissions (80%) and highest GHG intensity. The results for other countries make similar, if not as pronounced, patterns apparent. We discuss the results and possible mitigation options against the background of the goal to prevent dangerous climate change.

Abstract: Potrošnja energije u zgradarstvu iznosi preko 40% od ukupne potrošnje u Hrvatskoj, od koje se čak 80% energije troši za grijanje i hlađenje. Energetski standard u zgradarstvu Hrvatske leži daleko ispod današnjih tehničko-ekonomskih mogućnosti, odnosno 85% objekata ne zadovoljava sadašnje propise o toplinskoj zaštiti. Kod novogradnji, a posebno kod zgrada koje se saniraju, raspoloživi potencijal mjera energetske učinkovitosti ne koristi se dovoljno. S druge strane, za sustavno rješenje problema energetske učinkovitosti u zgradarstvu nisu dovoljne opće regulative (pravilnici, akcijski planovi i/ili samo usvajanje inozemnih direktiva), nego se značajni efekti mogu postići tek donošenjem novog standarda. Naime, pravilnici i direktive daju samo opće smjernice (ciljeve) i kvalitativne mjere dok je za projektiranje energetski učinkovitih zgrada potrebno imati standard, koji predstavlja čitav niz konkretnih mjera za postizanje postavljenih ciljeva. Upravo zbog navedenih razloga Hrvatskoj je neophodan novi standard koji bi bio napravljen po ugledu na najzahtjevnije EU standarde na tom području, ali primjeren hrvatskim klimatološkim prilikama te u mnogim elementima i ispred EU standarda. Razvoj tržišnih mehanizama trebao bi potaknuti razvoj i korištenje tehnologija energetske učinkovitosti i obnovljivih izvora energije integriranih u novi standard.

Abstract: Croatian Solar House (CSK) actually represents a laboratory, where, among other things, solar hydrogen energy conversion will be examined and developed. Therefore, this paper shows photovoltaic (PV) systems that are sized for fulfilling all the consumers electric energy needs and at the same time deliver their excess energy to the electric grid on which that system is connected. PV systems consist of four PV generators which are connected through the power conditioning unit and DC/AC inverter on a mutual assembly part. For energy storage a hydrogen system will be used which consists of an electrolyser, fuel cell, metal-hydrid storage and pipelines. The storage capacity is determined by balancing the energy so that it covers daily and seasonal energy needs as far as possible, and makes CSK energetically independent. This paper intends to pave the way towards a mathematical model for optimal sizing of PV generator and hydrogen storage, which satisfies consumers' needs for electric energy.
