Around 100’000 people died in a conflict motivated by quests for recognition and respect and justified by ethnic and religious criteria. Only four years later, Lonely Planet selects Sri Lanka the «Top Destination» of 2013. Visitor numbers skyrocket and the government, the army, and large-scale investors invest heavily in the tourism infrastructure. The tourism boom, however, mainly profits the oligarchy and widely excludes poor communities. This Bachelor Thesis pursues two goals. On the one hand, it examines the potential of cooperative tourism as an alternative to the dominating authoritarian capitalist tourism industry. On the other hand, a cooperative tourism package is developed for the destination Nilaveli/Trincomalee, intending to serve the interests of locals and tourists alike. ER
