Michael Beier studied business administration at the University of Cologne and graduated as Diplom-Kaufmann (Majors: Organization & Strategy, Economic/Social Psychology (focus on Occupational & Organizational Psychology), Business & Strategic Management). He then worked as a research assistant at the Seminar for Business Administration, Corporate Development and Organization at the University of Cologne. There he received his doctorate in business administration with a dissertation in which he implemented an empirically based multi-agent based computer simulation of the development of relationship networks at startups which he applied and analyzed to research factors influencing the network evolution.

He has worked for more than 15 years as a business analyst, data scientist and developer in software development, business intelligence and customer relationship management. Most recently, prior to joining FHGR, he spent several years as managing partner of a consulting and services company in the field of online communications.

At FHGR, he works in the Swiss Institute for Entrepreneurship (SIFE) in the research area "Digital Strategies". His research and consulting focus lies in the area of intersection between organizational research, digital transformation and computational social science with a special focus on digital business models, digital communication in and of organizations as well as analytics/AI applications. In particular, he is concerned in this regard with the strategic alignment and implementation of the interplay between human-based and computer-based processes as well as the digitally mediated collaboration of people in organizations.

Results of his research have been published in renowned conference proceedings (e.g. ICIS, ECIS, HICSS) and journals (e.g. Journal of Medical Internet Research, Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing).
