Dr. Michael Beier

Dr. rer. pol.

Research associate

Michael Beier studied business administration at the University of Cologne and graduated as Diplom-Kaufmann. He then worked as a research assistant at the Seminar for Business Administration, Corporate Development and Organization at the University of Cologne. There he received his doctorate in business administration with a dissertation in which he implemented an empirically based multi-agent based computer simulation of the development of relationship networks at startups which he applied and analyzed to research factors influencing the network evolution.

He has worked for more than 15 years as a business analyst, data scientist and developer in software development, business intelligence and customer relationship management. Most recently, prior to joining FHGR, he spent several years as managing partner of a consulting and services company in the field of online communications.

At FHGR, he works in the Swiss Institute for Entrepreneurship (SIFE) in the research area "Digital Strategies". His research and consulting focus lies in the area of intersection between organizational research, social relationship/interaction networks and digital transformation with a special focus on digital business models and analytics/AI applications. In particular, he is concerned in this regard with the strategic alignment and implementation of the interplay between people-based and digital processes as well as the digitally mediated collaboration of people in organizations.

Results of his research have been published in renowned conference proceedings (e.g. ICIS, ECIS, HICSS) and journals (e.g. Journal of Medical Internet Research, Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing).

His current areas of work are:

  1. Impact of digital transformation on organization, strategy, business models, innovation, and marketing (e.g., digital organization, new work, homeoffice, telework, remote work, digital leadership,   ambidexterity, stakeholder/customer orientation, collaborative innovation, digital marketing strategy, permission-based marketing)
  2. Digital strategies and applications for stakeholder-driven and human-centered innovation (users, customers, patients, employees) and insights/learning oriented marketing
  3. Strategies and reference models for organizational integration of data governance, data management, data sourcing, data processing, analytics and artificial intelligence (e.g., data-driven/evidence-based innovation, data-driven/evidence-based culture, data-based products/services, augmented/integrated intelligence, data ethics, consent management)
  4. Strategies, business models and reference models for companies/organizations regarding Metaverse (augmented/virtual reality, gaming, virtual worlds) and Web3 (blockchains, digital ledger technologies, smart contracts, tokenization, micropayments, decentralization, DAOs)
  5. Modeling and influencing decision-making & behavior of (individuals and units in) organizations (e.g., data ethics, corruption, risk-/safity-behavior, discrimination, organizational culture, customer orientation, sustainability)
  6. Development/evolution, management and governance of business relationships, alliances, associations, networks and ecosystems
