Sketch & Draw

Technical developments, whether multimedia, artificial intelligence or augmented reality, many of the challenges we face today have to be developed visually, because design engineering has the advantage of being able to communicate the complex in a simple visual way. Drawing is one of the first cultural skills of mankind. Sketching will be of great significance for the engineering of the future, because the sketch has the potential to depict the future. Thus, sketching as a cultural technique is essential for the society. Sketching is a knowledge and education management in the current multimedia age, but also that of the future.

For 12 years, the Sketch&Draw method has been applied at the UAS Grisons as a drawing methodology for technical students. What began as a systematic method has been developed into a fully developed didactic approach. Sketch&Draw teaches sketching for professions with no affinity to design as a visual language tool. The classic challenges of sketching are summarised in 10 simple rules.

The means of blended learning are integrated. Likewise, sketching on tablets provides access to the digital processing chain. In almost sixty short tutorials and exercises, the teaching is made available to the students as an online self-learning tool.

«Establishing sketching in teaching as an approach to complex issues and innovative solutions is a USP in the European educational landscape.»

Project at a glance

Project at a glance

«Sketch & Draw» is a method to learn sketching, reduced to the essentials: Pencil and Paper plus 10 rules. The theory is based on a few drawing and visual rules that form the basis for the representation of all facts. Multimedia producers need to plan visually.

Initial situation

Initial situation

In the age of multimedia and pictures everywhere it is increasingly relevant to plan pictures precisely. Sketching is the visual notation of ideas. Who communicates with images communicates more effective and even straighter.

Project goal

Project goal

Ideas must be visualized. Only then they can be understood by others. The sketch is the most immediate medium to visualize ideas, because the sketch needs, besides a minimum of time, no other things than a pencil and some paper. The sketch reduces the complex, focuses and leaves the viewer space for his own ideas.

Implementation

Implementation

«Sketch & Draw» sets the basis of the lectures in visualization and summarizes the most important rules in a workbook. Only sketches have the ability to visualize the future. That’s why sketching has become an important tool.
