Data is the foundation of many products and services that shape our daily lives—and the demand for data science professionals is correspondingly high. With the MSE in Data Science, you’ll be well-prepared to develop innovative, data-driven solutions. A degree in this field opens the door to top-level professional positions or careers in research and development.

At the University of Applied Sciences of Grisons, you’ll delve into machine learning and simulation for predictive models and hybrid approaches; visual analytics to explore, communicate, and interactively utilize data-driven insights; as well as scalable data processing and high-performance computing (HPC) for data-intensive applications. Another focus is on the development and application of large language models (LLMs) and NLP methods for text analysis, information extraction, and semantic search, as well as on research into information-seeking behavior. You will apply your skills in an interdisciplinary manner—for example, in computational science, engineering, life sciences, or sports. You will deepen your expertise through practice-oriented projects—either as part of research projects at the University of Applied Sciences of Grisons or in collaboration with industry partners.

The Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) is an educational program jointly developed by Swiss universities of applied sciences. It is designed for highly motivated bachelor’s degree graduates with excellent academic records.

Data science skills are among the most sought-after qualifications on the job market—and demand continues to grow as artificial intelligence becomes more widespread. With an MSE in Data Science, a wide range of career paths are open to you: in industry as well as in the ICT sector, in healthcare and the life sciences, at banks and insurance companies, in public administration, in sports, or in research and development.

As a graduate, you could work, for example, as a data scientist, data engineer, machine learning or AI engineer, as a specialist in data visualization and visual analytics, or as a computational scientist in the field of simulation and high-performance computing. With your expertise in large language models (LLMs) and NLP, you’re also ideally suited for developing AI-powered applications—one of the most dynamic fields in digital transformation.

The master’s degree qualifies you for challenging specialist and leadership positions in which you will design, implement, and oversee data projects. A career in applied research is also open to you—for example, at universities or in corporate research and development departments. In this way, you’ll actively help shape the data-driven transformation of the economy and society.

Course Content

Data science combines statistics, computer science, and machine learning to generate knowledge and added value from data. The MSE in Data Science is based on three thematic pillars: data analytics, data engineering, and data-driven products and services.

With an MSE in Data Science, you’ll master the entire data value chain: You’ll apply statistical methods to describe and explore data and draw well-founded conclusions from it, and you’ll develop data-driven models using data mining, machine learning, and deep learning. You will organize the collection, storage, and processing of data from heterogeneous sources and develop applications that process data streams and deploy models in a production environment. In addition, you will understand business requirements for data products and be familiar with non-technical considerations such as ethics, data protection, and security.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the MSE Engineering program, you need a bachelor’s degree in Computational and Data Science or a comparable degree. Your overall academic performance throughout the bachelor’s program must correspond to an ECTS grade of A or B. If you have a grade of C, admission may be granted “sur dossier.” A grade of D is not accepted.

6.0 = A
5.5 = B
5.0 = C

Recommended bachelor’s degrees:

For the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) with a specialization in Data Science, you should ideally hold a bachelor’s degree in Computational and Data Science or a closely related technical discipline.

The following fields of study, among others, are particularly suitable:

  • Computational and Data Science
  • Computer Science
  • Business Informatics
  • Electrical Engineering / Information Technology
  • Physics or Mathematics (with a focus on Computer Science)

Graduates of other technical degree programs may also be admitted, provided they have the necessary foundational knowledge in the subject area. Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Exceptional cases

If both the overall and subject-specific grade point averages correspond to an ECTS grade of C, admission “based on the application” is possible in justified cases. If academic performance cannot be assessed based on the transcripts, an admissions interview will be conducted with the applicant. Applicants from abroad must provide proof of conversational-level German proficiency.

Organizational matters

How much does the MSE Engineering at the UAS Grisons cost? Where does the course take place? How many ECTS credits will I receive? How many days do I have classes? What degree will I have after the course?

Tuition fees

The one-time registration fee is CHF 300. This fee will be applied toward the tuition for the first semester. If you do not begin your studies, you must still pay the registration fee. It is non-refundable.

Tuition is:

CHF 960 per semester for students with Swiss or Liechtenstein citizenship.

CHF 1,550 per semester for all other students.

International students who have resided in Switzerland for at least two years prior to the start of their studies, are financially independent, and were not enrolled in any educational program may apply for a reduced tuition fee of CHF 960. This must be reviewed and approved in advance by the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons.

For students from countries outside of Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the EU, and EFTA, the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons requires a deposit of CHF 3,000.

The tuition fees do not include: course materials, specialized software, travel, meals, and lodging for field trips, intensive weeks, and the bachelor’s thesis.

You will need your own high-quality laptop. You can obtain recommendations from the program director.

Be sure to also look into financing options, such as scholarships or grants.

Place of Study

Classroom instruction takes place in Zurich, while the practical training and research projects are conducted at the Chur campus of the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons.

ECTS points

European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is an instrument for creating a European educational area in which students and teachers can move freely. ECTS points are awarded for the workload required to achieve the expected learning outcomes of a course. ECTS points form the basis for the recognition of academic achievements and diplomas between universities.

ECTS points
One ECTS point corresponds to an average student workload of 30 hours. In addition to attending courses, the student workload also includes time spent preparing for and following up on courses, examinations and self-study. In a full-time course, 60 ECTS credits are earned per year, which corresponds to a workload of 1800 hours.
At the UAS Grisons, the Bachelor's degree program comprises 180 ECTS credits, a consecutive Master's degree program 90 ECTS credits.

Duration of Study

The MSE Engineering program can be pursued on either a full-time or part-time basis. The recommended duration of study is 3 semesters for full-time students and 5 semesters for part-time students.

The maximum duration of study may not exceed 8 semesters for either full-time or part-time study. In exceptional cases, an additional semester may be granted. Breaks in study do not count toward the duration of study. These may not exceed a total of two semesters.

Classes are taught in German and English.
