Creative Media & Digital Innovation Exchange Programme – enjoying the perfect study-life-balance in Chur for a semester
In the autumn semester, the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons offers a 30 ECTS English-taught programme for exchange students “Creative Media and Digital Innovation”. Incoming students will be able to benefit from a unique study programme combining courses from the fields of Multimedia Production and Digital Business Management. Both fields are combined in a multidisciplinary project (8 ECTS credits) in which students independently develop a research question and either theoretically or practically work on it in a creative manner. The multidisciplinary project can draw from the following disciplines and will be mentored by faculty members specialised in these fields: visualization, interactive media, video and audio production, animation, live communication, corporate communication, radio production, media science, user experience, xR, data science, digital business innovation and digital strategy.
Courses
Sketch & Write
In this module students will practice different types of creative writing and at the same time they will learn the basics of sketching. Both techniques will help them to sharpen their view of the world around them, to look at things from different perspectives and finally also to improve their communication skills.
Convergent Production
In this module, students create and individually publish a multimedia product that includes an experimental element. They are free to choose any topic, form, and technology. Depending on their chosen product, they may work as reporters, researchers, photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, or presenters. During frequent coaching sessions, they can receive support and feedback on the conception and realization of their product.
Digital Storytelling
Stories have been told since time immemorial. As a method, storytelling is used in all areas that have to do with communication. The Digital Storytelling module explores various ways of using digital means to tell stories in exciting and new ways. The goal is always to reach the audience in the best possible way.
Language Courses
Choose either a beginner’s German language course or an English language course (regular English and Business English courses are available at levels B2-C1).
International and Intercultural Communication
Successful communication begins with understanding ourselves. Culture is fundamental to the way we orient ourselves in the world and helps provide a common world view from which we communicate. Understanding what we hold in common and where we have to stretch ourselves is the key to successful exchange as the world continues to move closer together.
Thanks to new technologies, everyone from the international business leader to even the local craftsperson is working and living more globally. This contact may eventually help us to communicate and understand each other better, but meanwhile exposes our cultural blind spots. This module will help us develop a more subtle awareness of our own cultural and mental constructs and improve our communication with others as the world becomes more and more interconnected.
Game design and interactive storytelling
Students will gain a broad understanding of the game development process via art and interaction design principles like structural composition, game mechanics, level design and world building, which will be practised using sketching and board game design techniques. Students will come away with a confident set of design tools allowing them to create compelling, artistic and culturally meaningful games and user experiences.
Artificial Intelligence
The module is designed for students who want to become familiar with the topic of AI. It offers an introduction to accessible technologies and software and enables creative, practical experimentation with different AI tools. No prior technical knowledge nor programming skills are necessary. We will work with simple scripts and ready-made templates in the programming languages JavaScript and Python. The mornings are dedicated to introductions and exercises. In the afternoons, students will have time for hands-on experiments. They will be mentored individually.
Strategic Foresights
In order to shape a successful entrepreneurial future, it is essential to be informed about current trends and topics as well as a companies’ social, economic, technological, ecological and political environment. Especially in a globalized world, which is characterized by increasing complexity and constantly changing markets and industries, these requirements are becoming more and more important. In the seminar, students learn about strategic foresight as one important activity of a companies’ strategic management and deal with aspects such as risk and uncertainty. In addition, students learn how to use established techniques and systematically identify, analyse, and assess the relevance of major trends. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to deal with relevant topics and trends in a specific work context in a profitable way for the company.
Product Management
In this module students will acquire sound knowledge how to manage products for digital business models in the areas of productization, promotion & roll-out as well as feedback & education. Students will learn why product management is crucial for digital business management, craft a product strategy and develop a product roadmap for real use cases.
Digital Transformation and Disruption
Technological progress and ubiquitous network connections combined with entrepreneurial ingenuity are turning industries upside down. The course takes an in-depth look at the root causes and effects of this tremendous shift and introduces key concepts and models that help understanding digital disruption better. Further, the course comprises company visits and thereby offers practical insights.
Living in Chur
Apart from a unique study programme in a professional, modern environment, a stay at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons offers students the opportunity to live in a stunning region with over 1,000 mountains, 150 valleys and 615 lakes. Only a couple of minutes from the campus is Brambrüesch mountain, an ideal area for hiking, biking and skiing. There are regular buses and trains between Chur and the manifold mountain areas of the Grisons, which are loved by tourists from around the world. Chur has numerous museums, restaurants and cafés as well as plenty of bars to meet up with friends and enjoy the lively city's exciting nightlife. Furthermore, Switzerland’s location in the heart of Europe makes it an ideal base for city trips to Zurich, Munich, Milan or Paris.
